A Sydney teenager has become an online superstar because of his uncanny resemblance to pop idol Justin Bieber.

Jamie Laou, 17, has attracted more than 50,000 followers on Twitter, over 400,000 YouTube views and several Facebook fan pages set up in his honour.

Although his fan base is considerably smaller than that of the Canadian singer, who commands more than 6 million Twitter followers, his audience demonstrates a similar devotion.

Messages from his fans like “I LOVE YOU JAMIE!!!!” and “JAMIE GET ONLINE PLZ” appear regularly on Twitter, where he was one of the world’s most popular topics for hours at the weekend.

Laou first joined Twitter in 2009, but it wasn’t until later that he realised how powerful looking like Justin Bieber could be.

“Whenever I got on webcam on different sites little girls would cry. It was crazy,” he told news website Gawker in an email.

On one occasion more than 800 people were watching his live video broadcast, many of them convinced they were looking at the real Justin Bieber until he revealed the truth.

But rather than offending the fans, he quickly gained a following of his own, which has been rapidly growing over the past several weeks.

He even earned the attention of the real Justin Bieber when he posted a message on Twitter suggesting that the pop star was not giving back enough to his fans.

“If Justin love his beliebers so much why hasnt he kept posting youtube video. Since thats why we subscribed him in the first place?” he wrote.

That message ignited a storm of angry comments from Justin Bieber fans, until the 16-year-old megastar stepped in to cool things down.

“Sorry I don’t have any problems with you and I actually appreciate your support and other male fans. I appreciate everyone supporting,” Bieber wrote on Twitter.

This week Laou has been using the platform to take a stance against bullying, promoting the hash tag #stopbullying.

“Promise me, you see anyone getting bullied, tell somebody, even a friend say.. You know that persons nice and doesn’t deserve that,” he wrote.

He also sings and raps in the videos, but says he has no plans to steal the pop star’s throne.

“I’m never a Bieber wannabe. I’m myself,” he said.

“I’m just a teenage kid that has cool hair.”
